Lake Merritt Weed Warriors Work Day
March 25, 2017
9:00 am to Noon
Our next Weed Warriors work day will take place at the north end of Lake Merritt. We'll be working to spiff the landscaping at the Pergola and along Lakeshore. These are the first locations the runners will see the following weekend as they start their Oakland Running Festival races. We'll be weeding, but if your back and/or knees are not up to weeding, there is plenty to do so don't stay away. You can pick up litter, using pick-up sticks. Meet at the Pergola on El Embarcadero.
Bring your favorite gardening equipment for your use, such as gloves and a hand digging tool. Don't stay away if you don't these. There will be some loaners.
Note: Rain cancels but not drizzle. If in doubt, call 510.343.4013 after 7:30 am that morning.

About the Weed Warriors
Following a model used successfully at the Morcom Rose Garden, an ad hoc group of citizens have organized themselves to be trained by Public Works staff to perform assigned tasks such as mulching, weeding, deadheading flowers and general cleanup. Oakland Public Works‘ parks maintenance staff, led by Crew Leader Juan Cana and supervised by Parks Supervisor Victoria “Tora” Rocha, directs and supports our work.
Those who wish to join a monthly work party, typically held on the last Saturday of every month, can sign up to receive email invitations. People who wish to work on their own schedule can adopt a specific planter bed. If you are interested in joining this effort, please join our list for workday announcements
Part of the joy of our workdays is the satisfaction of seeing the landscape of Lake Merritt improved by our touch. For many, camaraderie among co-workers is an equal source of pleasure, and both themes are represented in photos of our work
